About Group

Radioactivity Group establishes national radioactivity metrology, and develops/disseminates measurement technologies for radioactivity. We realize radioacitivity unit Bq―a quantity of radioactive material in which one nucleus decays per second―in the SI unit.
We aim to improve the quality of life by offering calibration and testing services as well as certified reference materials (CRMs) required for radiation safety, and radioactivity quality control and assurance. We provide these services to medical facilities, environmental agencies, research labs, and nuclear power plants.

Current R&D Projects

  • 1 Establishment of metrology for difficult-to-measure radionuclides and radioactive gases, and securance of international equivalence via key comparison
  • 2 Development of measurement technologies and providing calibration/test services to radioactivity fields
  • 3 Development and dissemination of radioactivity CRMs
  • 4 Development of activity measurement technologies for life-ambient environments and food
  • 5 Development of proficiency testing schemes and operation of the programs for radioactivity test labs

Recent R&D Highlights

  • Development of primary standards for airborne radioactivity
  • Establishment of primary standards for artificial radioactive isotopes of 134Cs, 137Cs and so on
  • Establishment of radon primary standards and security of international equivalence via key comparison
  • Export of radioactivity primary standard instruments to foreign metrology institutes (South Africa, Thailand, and Indonesia)
  • Measurements of radionuclides (137Cs and 3H, etc.) in seawater around the Korean Peninsula for the radiological assessment of radioactive impact caused by the discharge of radioactive contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan
