About Group

Ionizing Radiation Group establishes and disseminates national metrology for radiation dose and neutrons.
Radiation measurement includes air kerma, absorbed dose, precision measurement technologies for diagnostic/therapeutic radiation in the medical and industrial fields, neutron source emission rate, monoenergetic neutrons, neutron fluence, and neutron spectrometry. In addition, we ensure international equivalence through participation in international comparisons with other national metrology institutes. We contribute to improving the quality of life by providing legal metrological support for radiation safety/measurement quality management and calibration/testing services for radiation devices.

Current R&D Projects

  • 1 Development of air kerma metrology for X-rays and gamma rays
  • 2 Development of metrology for absorbed dose to water for therapeutic radiation
  • 3 Development of metrology for monoenergetic neutrons
  • 4 Development of technologies for neutron spectrometry

Recent R&D Highlights

  • Establishment of primary standards for air kerma in X-rays (<300 kV) and gamma rays
  • Establishment of primary standards for absorbed dose to water for therapeutic linear accelerators (X-rays/electron beams)
  • Development of dose evaluation technologies for particular medical equipment (CT, mammography)
  • Development of metrology for monoenergetic neutrons (2.5 MeV and 14.8 MeV)
  • Development of measurement technologies for BNCT neutron energy spectrum
