About Group

Inorganic Metrology Group establishes and maintains measurement standards utilized in areas such as food, environment, and industrial materials with the metrological traceability to the definitions of the SI base units for the analysis of the amount of substance (unit: mol) and composition of inorganic elements/compounds.
For our mission, we develop the primary methods of measurements, enhance the reliability of South Korea’s measurement capabilities in inorganic analysis by developing and disseminating various certified reference materials (CRMs) and ensure international equivalence through Key Comparisons among national metrology institutes.

Current R&D Projects

  • 1 Development of CRMs for analysis of harmful/nutritional elements in food
  • 2 Development of CRMs to maintain the reliability of chemical analysis in nuclear power plants
  • 3 Development of CRMs for inorganic analysis in environmental fields, including heavy metals in fine dust
  • 4 Development of CRMs for component analysis of key elements and doping elements in advanced industrial materials
  • 5 Practical realization of mol, the SI base unit, for elements/ions/inorganic compounds
  • 6 Development and maintenance of purity analysis methods and highest-grade reference materials for element/ion/inorganic compounds to ensure measurement traceability to SI base units

Recent R&D Highlights

  • Establishment of charge quantity system, essential for practical realization of mol, and development of high-purity CRM
  • Establishment of analysis procedures for impurities of more than 70 inorganic elements and development of analysis systems for carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen impurities
  • Development of technologies as well as CRMs for establishing measurement standards for copper isotope through precise measurement of copper isotope delta and development of mass bias correction methods
  • Dissemination of more than 40 types of standard solutions for single elements and ions to contribute to traceability to SI in domestic inorganic analysis
  • Enhancement of reliability of domestic food analysis through development of CRMs for elemental analysis in food and the domestic application of proficiency testing
  • Development and dissemination of CRMs related to fine dust, including fine dust in metropolises, at subway stations, and on the paved roads
  • Research for international comparisons, including elemental analysis of CCQM-K145 Alumina, to ensure the international equivalence of national measurement capabilities in related fields
