KRISS especially participated in a commemorative exhibition for the 50th anniversary of Daedeok INNOPOLIS, a public research complex in the Daedeok area. As a national metrology institute (NMI), KRISS showcased representative achievements, such as a model of 1 MN deadweight force standard machine, an aspheric mirror with the diameter of 1 m for space, and a model of a 50-qubit quantum computing system, capturing attention from the participants.

During the exhibition, the 1st Vice Minister Cho Seong-Kyung of the Ministry of Science and ICT closely examined the research achievements displayed at the KRISS booth. She asked various questions about the cesium atomic clock (KRISS-1) and the ytterbium optical lattice clock (KRISS-Yb1) with significant interest. Developed for the redefinition of the 'second' in 2030, KRISS-Yb1 made Korea the fifth country in the world to contribute to the calculation of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) with an optical clock.

The event attracted over 20,000 visitors, providing an opportunity for KRISS to share its excellent research outcomes with the public.

Following the discussion with young researchers, President Yoon explored KRISS Sejong Hall and examined the exhibits. Dr. Myoung Sun Heo, the head of KRISS Time and Frequency Group, explained not only the principles of generating standard time but also the role and importance of measurement standards in the industries. The President expressed deep empathy, emphasizing the crucial role of the time standard as a scientific foundation for the development of the internet economy and electronic communication.

Performance using Newtons’ apple tree at the main event

At the main event of the Future Vision Declaration Ceremony, President Yoon joined aspiring young scientists in a performance with the Newtons’ apple tree owned by KRISS, expressing their wishes for the continued advancement of science and technology in South Korea. President Yoon, in his commemorative speech, mentioned the concerns about restructuring national R&D and promised to support researchers.
