Korean ‘Gas Measurement Technology’ Rises Up as a Global Standard

- KRISS Exports Measurement Technology to Overseas Advanced National Metrology Institutes in 5 Countries including the US, UK and China -

KRISS has exported ‘automatic weighing system for gravimetric preparation of standard gas mixtures’ to advanced national metrology institutes(NMIs) in 5 countries including the US and the UK. A total of 6 units have been sold for over 1 million US dollars.

Conventional manual methods, which are time-consuming due to long weighing cycles and affected by various uncertainty sources, require repetitive manual measurements to achieve an acceptable uncertainty range of 20 - 30 mg. The ‘automatic weighing system’ developed by the Center for Gas Analysis in KRISS is less subject to influences of the uncertainty sources. All weighing process after loading cylinders on the system is fully automated to reduce the uncertainty caused by human activity and entry.

With this new system, the research team has found that the uncertainty is reduced to less than 10 mg in weighing cycles of less than 10 minutes. The uncertainty can be further reduced to less than 2 mg, depending on the measurement time. With the automated weighing system as a basis, KRISS has established world-class measurement standards by developing various primary standard gas mixtures, which are assessed for their equivalence through international comparisons among NMIs.
