From September 5th to 7th, KRISS hosted the Emerging Scientists' Workshop (ESW) 2023, bringing together researchers from Korea, China, and Japan. The ESW serves as a pivotal platform for exchanging research progress and strengthening networks among emerging scientists affiliated with national metrology institutes (NMIs) of the three countries (KRISS in Korea, NIM in China, and AIST/NMIJ in Japan). Since its initiation at KRISS in 2015, the workshop has been held in rotation by each country. This year's event marked a return to in-person meeting after a four-year hiatus due to the pandemic, attracting around 40 participants.

Opening remarks from the president of KRISS

The event commenced with opening remarks from Dr. Hyun-min Park, the president of KRISS, and the ESW Scientific Committee. The committee, a group of senior researchers from each institute, including Dr. Sam Yong Woo, shoulders the responsibility of critical decision-making, guiding the workshop from its planning stage to execution.

Kicking off with selected oral presentations, 30 emerging scientists shared their research backgrounds, progress, achievements, and future plans. As the participants had a wide span of research backgrounds such as physics, chemistry, and materials, the presentations covered a diverse range of topics related to measurement standards. Participants exhibited a keen interest in each other’s studies, actively engaging in a Q&A session that showcased their shared passion for advancing scientific knowledge.

Throughout the three-day event, research posters were displayed at the Sejong Hall of KRISS Administration Building. The posters captured attention not only of ESW participants but also of other KRISS researchers. This poster session served as a unique opportunity for emerging scientists to share intricate details and expertise that might not have been covered in the previous sessions. Following the poster session, participants from Japan and China engaged in meaningful discussions with KRISS researchers during lab tours.

Dr. In Ho Lee at the ESW 2023 Symposium

The final day featured the ESW 2023 Symposium. Three invited speakers from each institute delivered insightful speeches on measurement standard research. Dr. In Ho Lee, renowned for his contribution to the development of AI-based 5G frequency filters at KRISS last year, shared his experience, highlighting the potential of AI technology in overcoming challenges during research. The topics of Dr. Naoki Kuramoto and Dr. Jifeng Qu were “Realization of the New Kilogram by Counting Atoms in 28Si-Enriched Crystal” and “Progress on Quantum Metrology Research at NIM,” respectively. Even after the official schedule concluded, participants from Japan and China continued to showcase their passion for research through additional meetings with KRISS researchers.

In the field of measurement standards, where international comparisons are fundamental, international cooperation is indispensable. The emerging scientists from the three NMIs, holding crucial roles within the Asia Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP), are anticipated to strengthen research collaboration following the ESW 2023, reflecting a promising future for advancements in metrology.
