KRISS Hosts the Workshop on Extreme Science for Space Matters and Materials
The Workshop on Extreme Science for Space Matters and Materials took place at KRISS from August 3rd to 4th. This workshop aimed to discuss potential collaborative research following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between KRISS and SHARPS*, a Chinese research institute specializing in high-pressure studies. It provided a platform for sharing research results on extreme environments and science related to space matters and materials.

The workshop, in line with the previous domestic and international workshops, expanded its scope with the purpose of developing extreme science and promoting networking among researchers in Asia. The event featured research trends in ultra-high temperature, ultra-high pressure, ultra-high speed, high-energy lasers, zero gravity, magnetism and superconductivity, metal hydrogen, and extreme materials.
For this event, five researchers from SHARPS and HPSTAR* in China visited KRISS. Dr. Wenge Yang, the Center Director of HPSTAR, also attended the workshop, reaffirming the commitment to international collaborative research. Additionally, two Japanese researchers, including a participant from JAXA**, responsible for operating the Japanese module of the International Space Station (ISS), and a researcher who developed NESL (Neutron-combined Electro-Static Levitator) at ORNL SNS*** in the United States, also particiapted.

Dr. Geun Woo Lee, the head of Research Center for Extreme Measurements, stated, “It is highly significant that researchers from three countries—Korea, Japan, and China— voluntarily organized the workshop to foster mutual cooperation and networking for the development of extreme science.” He expressed anticipation for the second workshop scheduled to be held in China in 2024. Through this event, networking and mutual exchange among extreme science researchers are expected to become more active.
