2021 APMP Technical Activity Award 

- Dr. Yon-Kyu Park, Dr. Hyung Kew Lee and Dr. Inseok Yang Won Awards- 

The APMP Technical Activity Award Ceremony was held on December 21 (Tue) for Dr. Yon-Kyu Park, the Director of the Division of Technology Services(former APMP EC* member); Dr. Hyung Kew Lee, the head of the Electricity and Magnetism Group (former APMP TCEM* Chair), and Dr. Inseok Yang, the Team Leader of the Thermodynamics Temperature Team (former APMP TCT* Chair).

The Award is given to the members who complete the term of office as a chair in the APMP, and the award ceremony is held at the annual general assembly (GA). As the GA was conducted online this year, like last year, due to the COVID-19, the award ceremony was held independently with the prizes sent to the individual institutes.

- Dr. Yon-Kyu Park, the Director of the Division of Technology Service in KRISS, 

finished successfully his term as an APMP EC member. 

Dr. Park, who acted as an EC member for four years from 2017, got credit for his efforts in facilitating the cooperation between EC and TC and between EC and FG-CCCA.* In particular, he worked hard for the effective TCI/FGI operation by preparing the APMP TCI/FGI* project guideline. In his farewell speech, he recalled the time when he firstly visited the APMP to receive the Iizuka Award (currently, APMP Young Metrologist Award) in 2002, saying “I was grateful that I was able to work for the APMP during my term of office for 4 years.”

*FG-CCCA (Focus Group-Climate Change and Clean Air): A focus group for the research on climate change and air quality.

*TCI/FGI (Technical Committee Initiative/Focus Group Initiative): A bottom-up type project conducted by the proposals from TC and FG.

finished successfully their terms as a TCEM Chair and a TCT Chair, respectively. 

Dr. Lee and Dr. Yang served as the TCEM Chair and TCT Chair, respectively, for three years from 2018 to 2021, making significant contributions to the establishment of the measurement standards in electricity, magnetism and temperature and the cooperation within the NMIs in the Asian-Pacific region. In particular, they took much effort for the smooth TC operation despite many sudden changes, including the adaptation to the KCDB* 2.0 system, newly introduced at the end of 2019, the restrictions related to in-person meetings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the introduction of remote peer review.

*KCDB (Key Comparison Database): A database of BIPM for registering the calibration and measurement capabilities (CMC) of measurement standard institutions in each field and for viewing the records of the international comparison.

The news about the former chairs who won the APMP Technical Activity Award is published in the latest issue of the APMP Newsletter with the full script of their farewell speeches. The next TCEM Chair will be Dr. Meng Yusong of NMC/A*STAR, Singapore, and the next TCT Chair will be Dr. Hisashi Abe of NMIJ, Japan.

Besides the three chairs who left the office this time, other researchers from KRISS have currently participated in APMP as chairs. Dr. Dai Hyuk Yu is serving as the TCTF* Chair in APMP. In addition, since the GA in 2021, Dr. Yong Tae Kim, is working as the TCAUV* Chair and Dr. Byungjoo Kim, as the TCQM* Chair.

Furthermore, Dr. Hyun Min Park, the President of KRISS, was elected the next Chairperson of the APMP. After working as an EC member for 1 year, he will begin his 3-year official term from the end of the 2022 APMP GA that will be held in Tokyo, Japan in November this year.

Through the appointment of the KRISS members as the APMP TC Chair as well as the election of the KRISS President as the next APMP Chairperson, the role and status of KRISS will be raised further in the measurement standard community of the Asian-Pacific region.
