KRISS Participates in Quantum Korea 2023

“Quantum Korea 2023: Quantum Jump into the Future” was held from 26th June to 29th June at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), Seoul. Hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, the event aimed to commemorate the "First Year of Korea's Quantum Jump" and accelerate the spread of quantum culture. Alongside government-funded institutes such as KRISS, the event attracted participation from prominent scholars, government representatives, and leading companies, making it a top-notch international gathering.

At the event, a presentation was given by Dr. John F. Clauser, a recipient of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics for his research on quantum entanglement. Distinguished individuals such as Dr. Peter W. Shor, a Fields Medalist and an MIT professor, and Dr. Charles H. Bennett, a researcher from IBM, also attended Quantum Korea.

President Yoon presiding over the dialogue

Notably, on the 27th, President Suk Yeol Yoon visited the venue to discuss the development of quantum science and technology (S&T) with scholars. He presided over the “Dialogue on the Present and Future of Quantum S&T,” emphasizing the importance of the quantum technology platform, the establishment of a global network, and the significance of R&D investment as well as expert training. Following the discussion, President Yoon, along with the participants, toured the Quantum Korea 2023 exhibition.

What caught President Yoon’s attention the most during the exhibition was the superconducting-based 50-qubit quantum computer model. Since 2022, KRISS has been carrying out research to build a 50-qubit superconducting quantum computing system and its service infrastructure. At the exhibition booth, KRISS showcased their 20-qubit package along with KRISS YB-1, a model of the ytterbium optical clock developed by themselves, and a brainwave measurement system based on superconducting quantum interference devices. A conceptual model of quantum signal converter technology, developed by Dr. Jinwoong Cha, a senior researcher and the team leader of KRISS Hybrid Quantum Systems Team, was also displayed.

MOU signing ceremony to enhance international cooperation

Furthermore, KRISS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Quantum Machines, an Israel-based quantum computer development company, to strengthen international collaboration in quantum technology through a joint research project at the MOU signing ceremony.

Given the widespread interest in quantum technology across various fields, Quantum Korea 2023 provided an excellent opportunity to communicate national policies and the vision for quantum S&T to the public. It concluded as a meaningful event, contributing to the promotion of R&D achievements of KRISS.
