World Metrology Day is designated to commemorate the signing of the Metre Convention* by 17 countries in Paris, France on May 20, 1875. National Metrology Institutes (NMIs), including KRISS, and international organizations related to measurement standards annually hold events with new themes to promote the importance of units and measurements, which form the basis of science and industry.

* Metre Convention: It was signed in 1875 to develop and disseminate the metric system based on the Metre, with the aim of standardizing the measurement of length and mass. Korea joined the Metre Convention in 1959 and fully implemented the metric system based on measurement law in 1964.

This year, "Measurements supporting the global food system" was chosen for the theme of WMD. With the global population reaching 8 billion by the end of last year, the theme aims to reflect on the role of measurement standards in the food supply system.

During the event, individuals who contributed to the advancement of measurement science and technology received awards from the Minister of Science and ICT, the Chairman of the National Research Council for Science and Technology, and the President of KRISS. Following an introductory video showcasing achievements of KRISS in the field of food measurement standards, a keynote lecture on "Quality Management in the Food Industry" was delivered by Dr. Dong-won Seo, Director of the Korea Food Research Institute (KFRI).
