KRISS Held the 20th Measurement Club Workshop

The Measurement Club Workshop, organized by the SME Partnership Group at KRISS, was held on May 18th and 19th at the Technical Services Lab, KRISS. This event marked the first in-person gathering in four years, since the last face-to-face workshop in 2019.

The Measurement Club Workshop is an annual networking event since 2004 bringing together various experts and professionals from the industry, academia, and research institutes in the field of measurement. This year, 12 clubs, including the Mass·Photometry·Electricity/Magnetism·Scientific Instruments Club, hosted sessions. More than 100 organizations and approximately 400 measurement-related experts and businesses participated.

The event kicked off with a musical performance by the 'KRISS Ensemble' team, featuring Dr. Dong-hoon Lee, the chairperson of the Photometry/Color Club. This performance added a meaningful touch to the workshop, which had been eagerly awaited.

Dr. Yon-kyu Park, the Director of Division of Technology Services, addressed the attendees in his welcome sppech. He mentioned, "Due to the prolonged COVID-19 situation, network activities related to measurement have slowed down somewhat. However, the establishment of measurement standards in various advanced industrial sectors and collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutes have become even more crucial." He emphasized the importance of the Measurement Club as a representative collaboration program among KRISS, academia, and industry for nearly 20 years, hoping for continued cooperation and development.

On the first day, May 18th, eight sessions were held: 4 sessions in the morning (Electricity/Magnetism, Photometry/Color, Mass, Strength) and the other four sessions in the afternoon (Electromagnetic Waves, Hardness, Length, Acoustics). Each session covered discussions on current status and topics such as input impedance compensation for low-voltage measurement, traceability system of kilogram aligned in the revised unit system, and the overview of KRISS’s activities regarding international hardness standards. Additionally, the Acoustics session included tutorials on environmental noise assessment and the performance evaluation of sound absorption/insulation from acoustic materials. These tutorials, which support trainees in the industry with lectures on recent international trends and equipment in the field of measurement technology, consisted of three courses, and about 20 participants attended the tutorials.

The Session of Photometry/Color

On the second day, May 19th, the session of Industrial Measurement Equipment & Sensors, Research Equipment, and X-ray Diffraction was held in the morning. The session by Nano Safety Measurement Club, which took place for a long time with great enthusiasm in the afternoon, brough the workshop to a successful conclusion.

The Measurement Club Workshop also featured an equipment exhibition. 12 companies participated in the exhibition, showcasing a wide range of equipment, including ‘Cutoff Probe’ by Cemicom Inc., which results from the technology transfer of plasma real-time measurement sensor by KRISS. Various equipment, such as ‘Nano Particle Size Analyzer’ by Malvern Panalytical and ‘Equotip Hardness Tester’ by QCS Inc., attracted the interest of attendees.

Due to the pandemic, both domestic and international industries underwent significant changes. The revival of the Measurement Club Workshop is seen as an opportunity to further enhance collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutes in the field of measurement. Expectations are high for the growth of the measurement industry through strengthened cooperation.
