KRISS held the Emerging Scientist Workshop 2018 (ESW) from September 12 to 14 at KRISS, Daejeon, Korea. ESW, which started in 2015, is an annual international event that aims for sharing knowledge and experiences and deepening the cooperation between young researchers of NMIs in APMP region. This year, about 40 young researchers from KRISS(Korea), NIM(China), and NMIJ(Japan) participated in this workshop. 

 

 

On its first day, KRISS invited Dr. Anne Plant and Dr. Robert Hanisch from NIST(USA) who are the experts in the field of reference standards. They delivered invited talks on the issue of the importance of data reliability and the data science for big data in USA. After the session, there were flash presentations and poster session in the afternoon which lead ESW participants to actively introduce and discuss their up-to-date research activities.   

 

 

On the following day, three speakers representing each NMI made oral presentations. From KRISS, Dr. Junho Suh delivered his presentation on ‘Toward Quantum-Limited Nanomechanical Transducers’. Presentation on ‘Progress on the ultra-stable laser and 87Sr lattice clock’ by Dr. Ye Li from NIM and ‘Random effect detection and robust performance evaluation for Key Comparisons’ by Dr. Katsuhiro Shirono from NMIJ were followed. In the afternoon, ESW participants got a chance to visit three labs in KRISS in accordance with their respective research interest which are Watt Balance, Quantum Electrical Standard, and LINAC, and had time to discuss research cooperation. 

 

   On its final day, participants got time for in-depth discussion and shared their ideas on how to strengthen their practical cooperation among three NMIs.
