The University of Science and Technology (UST, President Kang Daelm) and seven national research institute schools are launching full-scale cooperation to support UST student startups based on deep tech from national research institutes.

UST and seven national research institute schools—the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS), the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT), the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine (KIOM), the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS), the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI), and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI)—signed a joint agreement at the UST main campus on Wednesday, July 29, to promote UST student startups based on public technology from government-funded research institutes.

This agreement is an extension of the joint agreement signed last December with five national research institute schools—the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB), the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT), the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH), and the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM). As a result, the number of schools that have signed the agreement now stands at 12, with plans to further expand to all schools in the future.

The main elements of the agreement include establishing a mentor-mentee startup model, in which professors and students carry out the entire process of startups, technology transfer, and technology investment together; identifying student entrepreneurs and providing entrepreneurship training and mentoring; offering research achievements and technologies held by government-funded research institutes and connecting them with technology licensing offices (TLOs); supporting the shared use of research spaces, equipment, and facilities; and linking projects and providing funding for startup activities and pre-startup projects.

Building on the cutting-edge public technology and research infrastructure held by each institute, the 12 UST national research institute schools will now begin to put these measures into practice.

Since President Kang Daelm took office, UST has been driving deep tech student startups in earnest, with the goal of becoming a "national research institute university where student startups flourish." To this end, last year UST worked with the National Research Council of Science & Technology (NST) to revise the "Guidelines on Startup Regulations for Researchers at Government-funded Research Institutes," opening the way for UST students to start businesses while enrolled. Through such efforts, UST continues to promote deep tech student startups based on the cutting-edge technology of national research institutes.

President Kang Daelm said, "We will continue to work so that the cutting-edge technologies developed by professors and students at each national research institute school lead to startups, are reborn as services and products in the market, and create new value." He added, "We will make all-out efforts together with the schools so that the talent nurtured directly at national research institutes can become a pillar of Korea's deep tech startups."

Dr. Lee Ho Seong, President of KRISS, said, "Since deep tech startups are about entering the global market with innovative technology as their weapon, we will actively support UST students and professors so that success stories emerge on the global stage based on core
