KRISS Hosts "Quantum Open Day"

- KRISS showcases quantum R&D achievements, policies, 

and strategies while reaffirming its role as South Korea's Quantum Hub. -

Experts from across South Korea's quantum community gathered to share key research and development achievements, as well as policy and strategic directions in the field of quantum technology—widely regarded as a cornerstone of future technological leadership—and to lay the groundwork for broader collaboration.

The Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS, President Lee Ho Seong) hosted the "KRISS Quantum Open Day" on April 2 at its headquarters. The event brought together around 230 experts from academia, industry, research institutes, and government to showcase KRISS-led quantum R&D achievements, along with national policies, strategies, and international cooperation efforts, while fostering a foundation for future collaboration.

KRISS is carrying out a broad national mission in the field of quantum technology—designated as a NEXT strategic technology—spanning research and development, policy and strategy formulation, industry support, and global cooperation. At the event, participants shared the current status and achievements of various quantum-related divisions within KRISS and discussed avenues for collaboration with domestic partner institutions.

The session led by the Division of Quantum Policy Management provided an overview of national quantum policies.

- The session began with a presentation by Dr. Kim Jinhee, Director of the K-Quantum International Cooperation Office, on the establishment of global cooperation networks in the quantum field.

- This was followed by Dr. Jung Il-Lyong, Head of the National Quantum Policy Research Center, who introduced major national-level initiatives, including the Comprehensive Quantum Strategy.

- Subsequently, Dr. Sung, Eun-Jung, Head of the National Center for Quantum Technology Strategy, presented on quantum investment strategies, while

- Dr. Yu Dai Hyuk, Director of the Korea Joint Quantum Institute, shared updates on the development of quantum research hubs and future operational plans.

The afternoon session focused on quantum technology R&D achievements.

- Dr. Choi Jae Hyuk, Director of the Quantum Technology Institute, presented major R&D initiatives, including the Quantum Science and Technology Flagship Project.

- This was followed by Dr. Lee Yong Ho, Head of the Center for Superconducting Quantum Computing System, who introduced the superconducting quantum computer system currently under development and outlined future plans.

- In addition, Dr. Kim Jae Wan, Director of the Center for Hyper-Connected Scalable Super-Quantum Computing, presented the center's ongoing work under the "Global TOP Strategic Research Center" program.

- Dr. Kang No-Weon, Director of the Division of Policy and Technology Services, also shared updates on the Quantum Computing Quantum Transformation (QX) Scale-Up Valley project and its current progress.

Following the presentations, a panel discussion was held to explore key topics including R&D developments, policy and strategic directions, international cooperation frameworks, and collaborative approaches among academia, industry, research institutes, and government to advance South Korea’s quantum ecosystem.

President Lee Ho Seong of KRISS stated that quantum technology is a "NEXT strategic technology" that will drive the nation's future growth, emphasizing that achieving a quantum leap requires the collective capabilities and close collaboration of stakeholders across academia, industry, research institutes, and government. He added that KRISS will faithfully fulfill its role as a "Quantum Hub (Q-Hub)" to foster the national quantum ecosystem and strengthen global competitiveness.
