On January 22, the delegation from the Swedish Board for Accreditation and Conformity Assessment (SWEDAC*) visited the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) to discuss potential cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including digitalization and quality infrastructure in metrology.

 * SWEDAC is Sweden's national authority responsible for accreditation and conformity assessment. Through the accreditation of standardization bodies, certification organizations, testing laboratories, and inspection bodies, it plays a key role in strengthening industrial competitiveness and consumer confidence. SWEDAC also participates in international accreditation cooperation frameworks such as the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and the International Accreditation Forum (IAF).

The SWEDAC delegation included Ulf Hammarström, Director General; Fredrik Lindahl, Head of Unit for International Development Cooperation; and Linnea Holm, Chief of Staff, along with representatives from the Embassy of Sweden in Seoul. The two institutions engaged in in-depth discussions on potential cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including the advancement of measurement science and the provision of calibration services.

The delegation first held a meeting with Dr. Lee Ho Seong, President of KRISS. This was followed by an institutional overview presented by Ms. Park Hyerin, Head of the Center for International Cooperation, who introduced KRISS's key missions and core activities.

The subsequent meeting was attended by Dr. Cho Wan Ho, Head of the Acoustics, Ultrasound and Vibration Metrology Group, and Mr. SUNG KANGYOUNG, Head of the Measurement Standards Services Group. They provided presentations on the current status of digitalization in metrology and quality infrastructure, respectively.

In particular, Dr. Cho delivered a presentation titled "Brief Introduction on the Digital Transformation (DX) for Metrology in KRISS," highlighting the role of measurement standards in ensuring data reliability in the era of hyper-connectivity and artificial intelligence, including smart homes and autonomous vehicles. He also shared KRISS's phased roadmap for the implementation of Digital Calibration Certificates (DCCs).

The SWEDAC delegation expressed strong interest in KRISS's DCC initiative and engaged in active discussions, raising questions about the role of standards and metrology in the age of AI.

Meanwhile, Dr. Cho Wan Ho and Mr. SUNG KANGYOUNG have been actively participating as KRISS representatives in the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM)'s Forum on Metrology and Digitalization (FORUM-MD) since its official launch in 2024. In particular, Dr. Cho has been serving as Co-Chair of the Discussion Group on Sensor Networks (FORUM-MD-DG-SN) beginning in 2025, taking a leading role in international discussions on metrology digitalization.

The visit by the SWEDAC delegation provided an opportunity to showcase KRISS's ongoing efforts in the digital transformation of measurement standards and is expected to further strengthen KRISS's role in advancing metrology digitalization within international organizations.
