KRISS participated in the 2024 Korea-China-Japan Emerging Scientists’ Workshop (ESW), held from August 26 to 28 at the National Institute of Metrology (NIM) in Beijing, China. ESW is a workshop aimed at sharing research progress and strengthening networks among emerging researchers from the national metrology institutes of Korea (KRISS), China (NIM), and Japan (NMIJ/AIST*). Since its inception in 2015, based on a proposal by KRISS, the event has been held alternately by the three countries. Although the event was temporarily suspended during the pandemic, it was resumed last year with KRISS hosting it in person. This year, the workshop was organized by NIM, with around 40 participants, including online attendees from NMIJ, joining the event.

The three-day event kicked off with a welcome address by Dr. Jifeng Qu, Vice President of NIM and a member of the ESW Scientific Committee. The ESW Scientific Committee is an organization composed of senior researchers from each institute, responsible for making key decisions from the planning to the execution of the workshop.
KRISS sent 12 emerging researchers to the event, including Dr. Sam Yong Woo, a member of the ESW Scientific Committee. Each researcher introduced their field in a 10-minute presentation session and shared additional details during a poster session, allowing for discussion and exchange of ideas among researchers.
On the second day of the event, participants were divided into small groups to discuss four key areas: Sustainability, Quantum Metrology, Digital Transformation & AI, and Health (including medical, food safety, and biotechnology). After the discussions, each group presented their results, providing an opportunity for participants to collaboratively explore future research directions.

Dr. Da-Hye Lee, Senior Researcher from the Biometrology Group, was selected as an oral presenter and introduced the latest research on "Biomarker Measurement: Challenges and Advances." In her presentation, she shared the latest trends in the bio field along with the measurement technologies and reference materials developed at KRISS, exploring opportunities for research collaboration with other participants.
Dr. Da-hye Lee shared her thoughts on the ESW, saying, “It was a great opportunity to present our research achievements on an international stage and to promote research exchange and cooperation between Korea, China, and Japan. The active discussions on various topics and collaboration strategies were especially valuable.”
She added, “We were able to share the challenges faced by each country's NMI and identify commonalities and unique aspects.” She also emphasized the importance of proposing solutions and inspiring each other, which she believes will enhance the prospects for long-term collaboration.

In addition, Dr. Yang Zhao from NIM gave an oral presentation on "Enhancing Clinical Diagnostics and Treatment: The Integration of AI with Mass Spectrometry in Precision Medicine," while Dr. Yuma Okazaki from NMIJ presented on "Status and Prospects of the Quantum Anomalous Hall Resistance Standard."
On the final day of the event, an ESW symposium titled “Vision for Emerging Researchers 2050+” was held. Dr. Jin Sang Jung, head of the Gas Measurement Group at KRISS, delivered a lecture on “Gas Metrology for Climate Change and Carbon Neutrality.”
During the event, emerging researchers from Korea, China, and Japan had a meaningful opportunity to ask questions about each other's research, exchange ideas on future research directions, and explore possibilities for continued collaboration.
Notably, with the conclusion of this year's ESW, Dr. Sam Yong Woo, who has dedicated many years as a member of the ESW Scientific Committee on behalf of KRISS, will be stepping down from his role. Starting next year, Dr. Suyong Kwon, Director of the Division of Physical Metrology, will take over the responsibilities as a member of the ESW Scientific Committee.
We look forward to the continued hosting of the ESW, fostering ongoing communication and exchange among emerging scientists, and further solidifying the foundation for global research collaboration.
