Costa Rica’s MEIC Vice Minister and LCM Delegates Visit KRISS

On August 26, Costa Rica’s vice minister of the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Commerce (MEIC) and representatives of Laboratorio Costarricense de Metrología (LCM) visited KRISS to sign an MOU.

The delegates visited KRISS as part of the legal metrology expert training program organized by Korea Testing Certification Institute (KTC) under KOICA ODA.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Korea-Costa Rica diplomatic ties, and the two countries have been expanding collaborative efforts, including a state visit to Korea by Costa Rica’s president (Nov. 2021).

The two institutes shared a pleasant conversation after introducing the participants. President Hyun-Min Park said, “I am very pleased to sign this MOU with LCM. I hope it will pave the way for more active exchange and cooperation with Costa Rica.”

Patricia Rojas, vice minister of MEIC, said, “Korea is Costa Rica’s important partner, and we have cooperated in various fields over the past 60 years. The purpose of this MOU is to expand cooperation in measurement science. It is an honor, and I look forward to building stronger ties.”

After watching the KRISS promotional video, KRISS’ Head of International Cooperation Inyong Hwang and LCM Director Fernando Andrés introduced their respective institutes. Inyong Hwang gave a presentation on the current status of KRISS and its cooperation with LCM, while the LCM director introduced the status of LCM and its strategic plan for 2025.

Since 2020, seven members of KRISS have been participating in KOICA’s ODA program (measurement standards). LCM has access to 18 types of measuring equipment at KRISS. In September, LCM staff attended a KRISS-organized technical education session on mass/pressure, length, temperature, sound/vibration, and gas analysis.

In addition, LCM on-site education and technical consulting will be conducted in November 2022, February 2023, and August 2023.

The MOU is expected to strengthen ties between the two institutes.
