World Metrology Day falls on the anniversary of the signing of the Meter Convention*, signed by 17 countries in Paris, France on May 20, 1875. It is annually celebrated by KRISS and metrology institutes around the world to raise awareness of the importance of units and measurements, which lay the foundation for science and industries.

    * Meter Convention: An international treaty signed in 1875 to establish standards of length and mass. Korea signed the Meter Convention in 1959 and fully adopted the metric system in 1964.

The 2022 event was held under the theme of “Metrology in the Digital Era.,” which was chosen to reflect on the role of metrology in the global transition to digital societies.

At this year’s event, persons of distinguished service to metrology were recognized through awards, such as the Science and ICT Ministerial Citation, National Research Council of Science and Technology Chair Award, and KRISS Presidential Citation. Wonjae Park, senior vice president of the National Information Society Agency, gave a guest lecture on the topic of “digital transformation.”

President Hyun-Min Park of KRISS said, “Modern industries and science and technology have developed with advancements in metrology. Measurement standards will serve as criteria for modern society to effectively embrace changes in the age of digital transformation.”
