MOU Concluded between KRISS and KIST Europe

- The MOU will help to establish a research foothold in Europe to facilitate international joint research. -

On February 28 (Mon), KRISS and KIST Europe (Germany) held a MOU signing ceremony for mutual cooperation. The ceremony was held online due to the spread of COVID-19.

KIST Europe, located in Saarbrücken in the state of Saarland, Germany, is Korea’s only and largest institute in Europe. The institute has the core research competence in environment and biotechnology, and serves as a foothold for the Korean industries, universities and research institutes to enter Europe and conduct collaborations. The EU Nano-Safety Cooperation Center, established at the KIST Europe through the cooperation among KIST, KRISS and Swiss EMPA in 2015, still contributes to the advancement of the nano-safety research.

The MOU is promoted to enhance the joint research in EU based on a further reinforced cooperative system in addition to the existing cooperation between the two institutions.

KRISS will take advantage of the material and human infrastructure that KIST Europe has in order to match the partners in Europe for the Korean industries, universities and research institutes and facilitate multilateral partnership, increasing the collaboration with the advanced institutions. In addition, KRISS will produce substantial accomplishments, including the increased participation in the EU’s Horizon Europe Program.

After the COVID-19 quarantine is relieved in the future, KRISS will visit the KIST Europe in Germany to further specify the mutual cooperation, including the exchange of human resources.

Hyun-Min Park, the President of KRISS, said, “We hope that the MOU can contribute to the acquisition of global research competitiveness by the two institutions, and serve as a bridge that connects the R&D works between Korea and Europe.” He added, “I am looking forward to seeing that the MOU is evaluated as an exemplary MOU that can help the Korean industries, universities and research institutes to enter into EU.”
