About Group

The Photonics Technology Team for Facility Safety develops and disseminates photonic sensor technology for facility safety diagnosis and real-time monitoring. Facility safety is evaluated by measuring the overall structural behavior and local damages. Accordingly, we are conducting research on fiber optic sensor technology for the evaluation of structural behavior, as well as terahertz imaging technology for the detection of internal local damages in facilities.

Current R&D Projects

  • 1 Scattered light-based optical fiber sensor technology for distributed strain and temperature measurement : BOTDA, BOCDA, OFDR, Raman-OTDR
  • 2 Optical fiber sensor technology for point strain and temperature measurement : FBG, Interferometry etc.
  • 3 Scattered light-based optical fiber sensor technology for distributed vibration and acoustic measurement : Phase-sensitive OTDR
  • 4 High-speed terahertz imaging technology for defect detection : A-scan, B-scan, C-scan, and 3D imaging technology

Recent R&D Highlights

  • Development and application of a random code phase modulation time difference-controlled fiber optic BOCDA sensor system with a high spatial resolution of 2 cm for easy positioning of strain measurement distributed in facilities
  • Development of T-ray A scanner to detect void defects inside steel cables used in bridges or concrete beams
