About Group

The Frontier of Extreme Physics(FEP) team realizes and controls extreme environments (e.g. high temperature and pressure, micro gravity, atomic or nano scale and non-metastable or metastable-environments in the laboratory to reflect the conditions of aero and space, deep oceans, the Earth’s interior and ourter planets. The team also develops measurement techniques under extreme conditions within atomic space and time. This will help humans extend their reach into extreme environments and contribute to the facilitation of new functional materials that can be applied to future industries.

Current R&D Projects

  • 1 Development of high temperature levitation and measurement techniques
  • 2 Development of dynamic high pressure and related measurement techniques
  • 3 Development of ultra-fast time-resolved scattering techniques (X-ray, laser, ultrasonics)
  • 4 Development of material property measurement techniques under non-equilibrium or metastable states.

Recent R&D Highlights

  • Revealing crystallization mechanism of colloids and NaCl solutions using solution-electrostatic levitation (S-ESL) that is equipped with Synchrotron X-ray and micro-Raman scatterings for the first time
  • Development of PAL-KRISS beam line at Pohang synchrotron acceleration facility which is necessary to measure extreme materials properties and to develop next generation devices
