About Group

About Group

The Ionizing Radiation Metrology Group conducts research for the establishment and dissemination of national measurement standards for ionizing radiation. This group develops standards for medical radiation, radiation/radioactivity, and neutron measurement and develops technologies for precision radiation measurements, calibration of radiation measuring instruments, and radiation equipment testing and verification. Furthermore, it offers legal metrology support and radiation equipment calibration/testing services for hospitals (clinics), local environmental analysis institutions, research centers/universities that use radiation applications, and nuclear power plants. These are in line with the group's purpose to support radiation safety/measurement quality management in medicine, industry, research, and academia.

Current R&D Projects

  • 1 Mono-energetic neutron measurement standards
  • 2 Absolute measurement of absorbed dose to water in medical radiation field
  • 3 Diagnostic radiation dose measurement standards and PET/CT imaging certified reference materials
  • 4 Measurement standards for radioactive gases, hard-to-measure radionuclides and radon radioactivity with international equivalence
  • 5 Development and organization of technology related to radioactivity calibration and proficiency testing for measurement institutions

Recent R&D Highlights

  • Measurement standards of absorbed dose to water for clinical linear accelerator high energy electrons beams (18, 20 MeV, uncertainty 0.9 %, k = 2)
  • Metrological traceability and precision non-invasive measurement techniques for mAs of chest x-rays (uncertainty 1.3 %, k = 2)
  • Establishment of a primary standard equipment for airborne radioactivity and the measurement standard (Kr-85, uncertainty 0.88 %, k = 2)
  • Establishment of the primary standard of artificial radionuclides of Cs-134, Cs-137 (uncertainty ≤ 1 %, k = 2)
