Thermometry and Fluid Flow Metrology Group

The Thermometry and Fluid Flow Metrology Group works to establish national standards for the SI unit of temperature (K, Kelvin) and the derived units such as humidity/moisture, thermo-physical quantities (thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, thermal expansion, specific heat etc.), and fluid flow quantities (flow rate, flow velocity, viscosity), and to disseminate these measurement standard technologies. On top of that, based on these measurement standard technologies, our group develops core measurement technologies that are necessary at the aspect of nation and society in the fields of climate change, environment, energy, and aerospace.

Current R&D Projects

  • 1 Development of measurement standard technology for research on thermodynamic temperature and the International Temperature Scale of 1990
  • 2 Development of measurement standard technology for humidity and moisture
  • 3 Development of measurement standard technology for thermo-physical quantities (thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, thermal expansion, specific heat etc.)
  • 4 Development of measurement standard technology for fluid flow metrology (gas flow rate, liquid flow rate, flow velocity, viscosity)
  • 5 Development of measurement source technology in response to climate change and the demands of advanced industries

Recent R&D Highlights

  • First observation in the world for the temperature change pattern due to solar reflection and heat radiation at the upper surface of cloud
  • First establishment in the world for the calibration system (–70 ℃ ~ 20 ℃) and calibration&test procedure of radiosonde humidity sensor
  • First development in the world for the on-site calibration system for hydrogen flow rate (100 National Research and Development Excellent Outcomes in 2020 year)
  • World top level development of measurement technique for the assessing greenhouse gas emission flow rate at the industrial and power plant sites
  • Development of tiny flow rate measurement standard system and noncontact tiny flow rate measuring sensor for improving reliability of drug injection medical device
  • Development of acoustic gas thermometer working upto mid-range of temperature(420 °C)
